Carbon neutral lubricants

BP Target Neutral works closely with Castrol – one of the world’s leading manufacturers and distributors of premium lubricating oils

Together, we have developed a range of carbon neutral products and services for individuals and businesses including logistics companies, fleet operators, vehicle workshop owners and even wind farm electricity generators.

Carbon neutral products and services

We assess the carbon footprint of each new carbon neutral lubricant and commit to reduce carbon throughout its lifecycle - including emissions associated with production, packaging and distribution.

We then offset the remaining carbon emissions by purchasing carbon credits from projects around the world that reduce or avoid GHGs.

As well as reducing or avoiding GHGs, these projects seek to provide economic, social and environmental benefits to the communities they serve.

Castrol Professional Oil

Around one billion cars – largely powered by internal combustion engines – are in use on the world’s roads today. Finding ways to help drivers tackle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is an important part of helping to advance the energy transition.

Castrol Professional is a high-performance engine oil and the world’s first certified carbon neutral oil in accordance with the BSI PAS 2060 standard. Castrol assessed the GHG footprint of the Professional range against criteria set by Greenhouse Gas Protocol, an organization that supplies the world’s most widely used GHG accounting standards. Castrol also made a commitment to reduce emissions throughout the product’s life cycle, including the emissions associated with its production, packaging and distribution.

Castrol then offsets the residual emissions through BP Target Neutral, supporting emissions reduction projects around the world, such as forest conservation in Zambia and renewable energy in China, through the purchasing of carbon credits.

BIO-SYNTHETIC engine oils

Innovative technology that blends oil from plants and combines it with traditional fossil-fuel based oils is helping Castrol increase the amount of renewable materials that we can use to make our engine oils.

In 2017, we launched Castrol EDGE BIO-SYNTHETIC and in 2018 Castrol MAGNATEC BIO-SYNTHETIC which are made with 25% sugarcane-derived oil compounds. Both have been validated using industry-approved tests and meet US government bio-based product criteria1 . The oils have also been certified as carbon neutral to the BSI PAS 2060 standard.

Castrol Edge bio lubricants

Castrol assessed the greenhouse gas (GHG) footprint of these products against the criteria set by Greenhouse Gas Protocol, an organization that supplies the world’s most widely used GHG accounting standards. We also made a commitment to reduce emissions throughout their life cycle. This includes the emissions associated with their production, packaging and distribution. Residual emissions are offset through BP Target Neutral.

Both products deliver a comparable performance to their non-bio-derived equivalents allowing consumers to choose a renewable and carbon neutral alternative, without compromising on performance.

Castrol Vecton

Road freight vehicles play an important role in driving global economic activity. However, the growth in road freight – especially in emerging economies – has increased the sector's energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 50% in the past 15 years1. Increasing numbers of fleet owners, therefore, are looking for more efficient and lower carbon solutions.

Castrol VECTON provides a range of lubricants specifically formulated to meet the needs of the commercial trucking industry. It helps fleet owners improve fuel efficiency and, in 2016, it became the world's first certified carbon neutral commercial vehicle engine oil. Castrol assessed the GHG footprint of VECTON against criteria set by Greenhouse Gas Protocol, an organization that supplies the world's most widely used GHG accounting standards. It also made a commitment to reduce emissions throughout the product's life cycle, including those associated with production, packaging and distribution. Residual emissions are offset through BP Target Neutral.

Transmax

Giving our consumers the opportunity to choose carbon neutral products is an important way in which we can help advance the transition to a low carbon future.

Castrol TRANSMAX ATF Professional FE and CVT Professional are transmission fluids used to lubricate the automatic gearboxes in passenger vehicles. Castrol TRANSMAX with Smooth Drive Technology™ automatically adjusts its friction level in response to changing pressures on critical transmission parts, thereby enabling longer transmission life.

Castrol Optigear Synthetic

Wind energy plays an important role in reducing greenhouse emissions. And lubricant technology can help to make sure that today’s wind turbines run reliably and efficiently.

Castrol wind gear oil

Castrol has more than 30 years’ experience of working with the wind industry and today supplies lubricants to thousands of wind turbines. It is also the first lubricant supplier in the world to offer the wind industry certified carbon neutral lubricants. Optigear Synthetic CT 320 and Optigear Synthetic X 320 are both certified as carbon neutral throughout their life cycle, in accordance with the BSI PAS 2060 standard. This includes their production, transportation and eventual disposal at the end of their service life.

To achieve carbon neutral status, residual emissions are offset through the purchase of carbon credits by BP Target Neutral, supporting emission reduction projects around the world, such as forest conservation in Zambia and renewable energy in China, through the purchasing of carbon credits. These projects also help provide economic, social and environmental benefits to their local communities.
