bp Target Neutral has developed a toolkit to help event organisers take responsibility for these emissions and work to do something about them.
With this toolkit and carbon calculator, you can transform your event from being carbon intensive to carbon neutral through a combination of reducing and offsetting. The toolkit is designed to guide you through the process of calculating your event’s carbon footprint so that you can offset your emissions with bp Target Neutral. You will also find advice on how to reduce your emissions, more explanation about how offsetting works, and a look into why making events carbon neutral is so important.
This toolkit starts with tips on planning a carbon neutral event, followed by the step-by-step walk-through of the carbon calculator. Next, you’ll be shown how to offset the carbon footprint you have just calculated. The toolkit is rounded out by a series of tips on how to reduce your event’s carbon footprint, how to raise awareness of your carbon neutral event – including links to supporting materials from bp Target Neutral – and a short reflection on how we can all increase our efforts going forward.

At the London 2012 games, bp Target Neutral offset the carbon emissions associated with the fleet of 5,000 vehicles transporting the Games athletes and officials.
We also provided advice and support to millions of spectators, helping more than half a million of them – a world record – to reduce or offset the carbon emissions that arose from their travel to the Games.
We have also partnered with the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), helping to offset all of the organisation’s greenhouse gas emissions from business travel between 2014 and 2018.
These activities have resulted in more than 100,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2e) being offset.
We partnered with the World Gas Conference (WGC) to help the organisation reduce the carbon footprint associated with running and managing its 2018 event in Washington, US.
As the event ‘Emissions Neutral Champion’, bp Target Neutral arranged the offsetting of carbon emissions from all delegate flights and event shuttle buses.
In 2018 more than 6000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2e) was offset to compensate for delegate travel to and from the event.
