BP has supported Para sport for ten years, is a partner of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and a number of national committees around the world. We were a major partner of the London 2012 Games and, with the British Paralympic Association, supported ParalympicsGB in their outstanding success at the PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games. We will be rooting for them in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games too. We are pleased that Paralympic athletes Richard Whitehead and Kare Adenegan have been appointed BP Ambassadors through to the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games
BP has just announced its partnership with British Athletics for the IAAF Diamond League meeting which comes to London from 21 to 22 July as part of the 2018 Müller Anniversary Games and which will include a number of para races. In 2017 we partnered with the IPC World Para Athletics Championships in London. BP used its support of the Championships to ignite #EnergyWithin with a group of aspiring athletes and media students.
“BP is inspired by the inner strength and determination that exists within Para athletes. That’s what we mean by the energy within,” says Duncan Blake, BP’s global brand director. “We think this energy can be ignited in us all and lead us to achieve excellence in our chosen pursuits. That’s why we gave a group of young people the chance to be mentored by those at the very top of their field – such as six-time Paralympic champion David Weir and award-winning Paralympic correspondent Gareth A Davies. Once the energy within is ignited in these young people, we hope that they’ll feel a desire to ignite it in others.”
The training involved six aspiring T54 athletes working with both David and his coach Jenny Archer, with the day featuring a technical track session as well as classroom-based workshops on strength, conditioning and preparation.
Meanwhile, the student journalist, photographer and filmmaker captured the action through the day – in the form of interviews, photographs and video. These featured in The Telegraph throughout its coverage of the World Para Athletics Championships London 2017.
