St. Thomas R.C. School emerged as the overall victor of the BP Trinidad and Tobago LLC (“bpTT”) Mayaro Primary School Zonal Athletic Games held in January 2016. Five schools in the Mayaro/Guayaguayare area competed in this year’s Games which were held at the Mayaro Recreation Grounds and the Ortorie Recreation Grounds. This year’s Games included field, as well as march past and track events. The participating schools were: Ortoire R.C. Primary School, Mayaro Government Primary School, Mafeking Government Primary School, St. Thomas (Mayaro) R.C. Primary School, and Guayaguayare R.C. Primary School. Mafeking Government Primary School was crowned march past winners. Sponsored by bpTT for the past 16 years, the Mayaro Zonal Games are an opportunity for primary school athletes from across the south eastern community to compete with the hope of representing Mayaro at the district and national levels. The games were officially opened by Matthew Pierre, bpTT’s community liaison officer. “BPTT has placed significant emphasis on youth development through sports in the Mayaro/Guayaguayare communities and our involvement has extended across football, netball, cricket and so much more. It is always a rewarding experience to be a part of this particular event, and we look forward to working with the zonal sports committee and other local organisations in unearthing and developing the enormous potential of Mayaro’s young people,” Pierre said. This year, the Mayaro Zone has twelve (12) athletes and reserves moving on to the National Games to be held on May 20th, 2016 at the Hasely Crawford Stadium. We wish them the best of luck!
