South African diesel drivers will be able to benefit from BP’s latest generation diesel fuel, which was showcased today at Gerotek, a state-of-the-art vehicle test track facility in Johannesburg.
Speaking at the briefing was Dr Graham Ketley, BP’s global Head of Diesel Product Development who said BP’s recently improved fuel is in response to a significant increase in the demand for diesel vehicles locally. “SA diesel vehicle sales have shown positive growth over the past few years. BP Ultimate Diesel, available in both 50 and 500ppm sulphur, offers this growing group of diesel drivers better mileage, improved engine performance and lower CO2 emissions.” “BP takes its role as an energy provider seriously and therefore invests heavily in fuels R&D worldwide. There are also separate teams looking after petrol and diesel as these are two vastly different fuel technologies which require different skill-sets, all of which BP has. “I can assure you that BP’s latest diesel formulation – as is the case with all our fuels – was put through its paces. A typical development process involves extensive testing in the laboratory, in engines and in vehicles, resulting in the winning formulation being identified and defined, with robust and extensive performance testing. “In the development of BP Ultimate’s latest generation diesel, we tested the fuel on a range of current and new vehicle technologies, from passenger cars to light and heavy commercial vehicles, to ensure that we bring to market the best available diesel fuel technology for today and tomorrow’s engines,” says Ketley. BP Ultimate Diesel is a premium, high-performance diesel fuel and independent testing has shown it can deliver benefits in four key areas.
- A cleaner engine – BP Ultimate has superior engine-cleaning properties and is formulated with more than ten times the cleaning strength of ordinary diesel
- Greater fuel efficiency – It burns more smoothly and completely than ordinary fuels to release energy more efficiently, which makes it better for the environment too – cutting back tank-to-wheel CO2 emissions by up to 3.5%
- Increased protection – BP Ultimate Diesel’s advanced formula helps to protect fuel system components
- Improved performance – The fuel increases engine power by up to 8% and improves acceleration by up to 6%
Peter Cock, BP’s SA-based Technical Manager for fuels is confident that local diesel drivers will welcome the improved diesel fuel. “We are very pleased to be able to make this product available to South African motorists. The latest generation BP Ultimate Diesel is compatible with all diesel engines in passenger cars and heavy vehicles, old and new engine technologies, and its properties exceed even the industry’s very toughest specifications. “People who drive light commercial vehicles and 4x4s (SUVs) fill up more often and are heavy diesel users. BP Ultimate Diesel will give drivers improved fuel economy when compared to ordinary diesel fuel. BP South Africa remains committed to product innovation and to providing the motoring public with the best choice in premium fuels,” says Cock. BP Ultimate Diesel is suitable for use in all diesel vehicles and in independent tests demonstrated benefits over ordinary diesel with ongoing use. It is also the only diesel recommended by the Automobile Association of South Africa – the most trusted motoring authority in the country. The fuel is now available at BP service stations countrywide.
