How we drive can have a significant impact on fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions. BP is always looking for ways to help our transportation customers find new methods of improving fuel efficiency. That's why we have invested in Peloton Technology, an automated vehicle technology company that has developed a system that allows freight trucks to travel closely together to reduce emissions.


Peloton's PlatoonPro links pairs of freight trucks together using wireless vehicle-to-vehicle communications to coordinate braking and acceleration. This means that they can travel within less than 20 metres of each other while reducing aerodynamic drag – an energy-saving technique inspired by the close formations that cyclists use. Travelling in this way can result in an overall approximate average fuel saving of up to 4% for the lead truck and up to 10% for the one following.


Understanding this technology helps us prepare for the future of autonomous vehicles and learn how the technology is being developed inside the vehicle.
