As part of its educational programmes BP is launching a new Geosciences and Engineering Speaker Series (BPGESS) initiative in Azerbaijan to enhance commitment by future generations of engineers to promoting geosciences and other related disciplines. The project provides students and academia in the areas of geology, geophysics, and engineering disciplines a good opportunity to meet, talk and engage with scientists and practitioners in these fields.
The launch event will take place in the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy and will have Rashid Javanshir, BP Azerbaijan President, Doctor of Geology and Mineralogy, professor, member of Azerbaijan’s National Academy of Sciences, as the first speaker. The topic of Dr. Javanshir’s lecture will be “The South Caspian Basin: Unique Geology and Unique Petroleum System.”
“BP as the operator of Azerbaijan’s major oil and gas development and transportation projects remains committed to supporting educational projects in Azerbaijan. We believe the new initiative will bring together large groups of representatives from the related disciplines and science including students in petro-technical and geosciences disciplines in the Azerbaijan State Oil Academy, Khazar University, Baku State University, Azerbaijan Technical University and Qafqaz University to share their common interests with regard to the future of their disciplines and their own plans to contribute to the development of the scientific basis of Azerbaijan’s petroleum industry”, says Rashid Javanshir.
“By offering such a unique educational opportunity to Azerbaijani students, we hope to attract the best representatives across the related universities who have potential to contribute to the development of geosciences, and are interested in industry careers. We are hopeful that the initiative will ultimately become an integral part of university calendars and will turn into a real geosciences and engineering students’ community event in Baku.”
As part of the new initiative BP plans to hold monthly sessions at Azerbaijan State Oil Academy inviting speakers of national and international scale to lead the discussions. BP also intends to share its own best-practices in relevant areas through leading conversations about recent developments in science and application of scientific trends to the industry.
BP has created a webpage about the new Geosciences and Engineering Speaker Series (BPGESS) within its www.bp.com/caspian website which can be navigated via www.bp.com/caspian/bpgess. The page will be regularly updated to provide information about the series, speakers, as well as abstracts from their speeches.
