BP’s Helios Plaza is the first LEED Platinum certified building in Houston (the highest level of environmental achievement for sustainable construction).
BP’s Helios Plaza is the first LEED Platinum certified building in Houston (the highest level of environmental achievement for sustainable construction). Helios Plaza’s award winning, sustainable design embodies BP’s commitment to a low carbon future, just as BP’s North American Gas and Power unit strives to supply markets with cleaner energy. This was the first time that BP Energy Company built a facility specifically for trading anywhere in the world. Helios Plaza has a curtain wall designed to withstand Category 3 Hurricane winds; a full data infrastructure designed to deliver maximum uptime to the trade floor; and dual power feeds (onsite natural gas generation and the grid.) From the outset, NAGP has been motivated to combine environmental performance with the best possible trading environment for staff. The building features airy double-height trading spaces (25ft ceilings) and support areas on a large open floor. The trade floor’s open design, abundant natural light and state of the art technology make it a productive and upbeat place to work. An on-site natural gas fuel power plant helps ensure that 24/7 business is never interrupted. BP’s investment in Helios Plaza also is an investment in people, helping attract the best and the brightest in the highly competitive gas and power trading and marketing arena.
What is LEED Platinum Building Certification?
Remarkable resource efficiencies and other innovative design decisions have earned BP’s Helios Plaza international recognition with the highest honour for environmental standards from the U.S. Green Building Council. The U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED green building certification system is the foremost program for the design, construction and operation of green buildings. LEED-certified buildings are designed to:
- Lower operating costs and increase asset value.
- Reduce waste sent to landfills.
- Conserve energy and water.
- Be healthier and safer for occupants.
- Reduce harmful greenhouse gas emissions.
- Qualify for tax rebates, zoning allowances and other incentives in hundreds of cities.
- Demonstrate an owner’s commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility.
Helios Plaza is designed to be environmentally sustainable with a remarkable capacity for resource conservation. The building is powered, heated and cooled by an onsite, clean burning, 4.6 megawatt natural gas-fueled power plant, which is more efficient and reliable than power from the grid. It uses less water than comparable office buildings through conservation and rain water harvesting utilizing a 400,000 gallon underground cistern. A wide array of building materials are recycled, re-purposed or used simply in their natural state. The Helios Plaza building is state of the art and high performance, employing high tech shading and skin glazing for maximum daylight and minimum heat gain. Also, the roofing material and laminated glass adds cooling benefits and wind protection.
