16,000 committed people playing a vital role in shaping America’s energy future

BP's commitment to the U.S. dates back 150 years through our heritage companies, Atlantic Refining and Richfield Petroleum. In the 1960s, the two companies merged, forming Atlantic Richfield or ARCO for short. That same decade, Standard Oil of Ohio (Sohio) and BP reached a deal that led to the first oil to flow from the North Slope of Alaska through the Trans-Alaska pipeline in 1977. Ten years later, BP acquired Sohio and made it the cornerstone of a new national operation, BP America.

In 1998, Amoco and BP announced their merger, combining their worldwide operations into a single organization. Overnight, the new company became the largest producer of both oil and natural gas in the U.S. Fast-forward to today: BP is leading the way in helping to meet the energy needs both of America and the world.

We support local communities

From Alaska to Florida, we support the communities where our employees live and work. We donate an average of $30 million each year to community initiatives through a wide range of sponsorships, events and activities.

Our employees are encouraged to contribute to society by supporting our global social investment initiative. Through our matching fund program, we match their charitable donations up to a set amount each year and also offer time off to allow employees to fulfill volunteer commitments.

Veterans voices

We have careers across BP for veterans like David and for veterans like you. These range from engineering and information technology, to marketing and accounting. We also operate in more than 80 countries, so no matter your background, the skills you learned in the military will directly fuel your career at BP. In fact, when you join our team, you’ll quickly learn how deeply committed we are to your career progression.

When you join BP, you’ll be welcomed and supported – and feel at home. You’ll work alongside people who value the same things you do, and you’ll enjoy a familiar, team-based structure.

As an employer, we offer excellent benefits and policies that promote service in the Guard and Reserve, and the Department of Defense has honored the company for these efforts. In the US, employees receive differential pay and continued health coverage during periods of qualifying military leave. Like all BP employees, our veterans also have access to short-term counseling and can get referrals to address personal and professional challenges.

We have a strong network of veterans within our company. Our Veterans Business Resource Group is a network for veterans, reservists, military family members, and other supporters at BP.

We provide additional assistance to military families through its participation in the Hiring Our Heroes initiative, which helps veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses find meaningful employment. Our partners in this nationwide program include other businesses, the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation and the US departments of Labor, Defense and Veteran Affairs.

We believe in the power of recovery through sport, having supported the Warrior Games, Valor Games, and US Paralympians – many of whom are military veterans.

In 2015, US Veterans Magazine named BP among the “Best of the Best” top veteran-friendly companies, and we were named to the 2015 Military Friendly Employer list by MilitaryFriendly.com.
