BP joins This Is Engineering as principal partner; strengthens BP fellowship at Royal Academy of Engineering

As part of our support for the 'Year of Engineering 2018', BP is delighted to announce that it is joining the Royal Academy of Engineering’s 'This Is Engineering' campaign to inspire young people to choose engineering careers

This is a multi-year campaign to rebrand engineering for young people from all backgrounds, and their influencers, to encourage them to take up engineering careers.

This Is Engineering – principal partner

Delivered in partnership with industry and the profession, it will address barriers to participation in engineering at all entry points (apprentices, technicians and professional). It is underpinned by a programme to create workplaces that attract and retain young people and provide a positive employment experience.

We will be developing supporting materials and classroom resources through our BP Educational Service and Schools Link programmes, building on our ongoing engagement with over 50% of all UK secondary schools. We are delighted that the launch of This Is Engineering and the Year of Engineering coincides with our celebration of 50 years of our support for STEM education across the UK.

BP executives elected as fellows

We are also proud to announce that two of BP’s top executives, Angela Strank and Gordon Birrell, have been elected as Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering. The Academy brings together the UK’s most successful and talented engineers for a shared purpose: to advance and promote excellence in engineering. Each year, fifty of the UK’s top engineers are elected as Fellows. Angela and Gordon now join the fellowship, which comprises 1,500 world-leading engineers from industry and academia.

The Academy elected Angela as a Fellow to acknowledge her success as a pioneering, executive female role model in science, engineering and business in the energy industry. She is also a longstanding advocate for STEM careers, sought after for her insight and experience, with a strong track record in research with over 30 publications to her name.

For Gordon, election as a Fellow reflects his involvement in the engineering and operation of oil and gas fields for 15 years before leading BP’s major upstream businesses in Azerbaijan, Alaska, Canada and the North Sea. He also chaired the management committee and was director of the International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (IOGP) from 2013 to 2015, and was the IOGP management committee sponsor for engineering standards.
