Level instruments - types and usage

Level instruments

Level measurement is used to determine the linear vertical distance between a reference point or datum plane and the surface or interface of a liquid, for the purpose of finding a volume or mass.

Students are able to demonstrate proficiency using many of the common level gauging instruments.

Lessons include:

Several methods used to determine the level of liquid in a stationary tank:

  • Innage tape-and-bob procedure
  • Outage (or ullage) tape-and-bob procedure
  • Dip stick
  • Sight gauge
  • Float and tape
  • Level switches
  • Radar

Tank level indicators:

  • Varec servo
  • Spring loaded tape and float
  • Magnetostrictive (MTS)
