Read about events and conferences where we showcase BP Ventures
On November 20, BP Ventures held its second Digital Energy event, alongside Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) at Bloomberg’s new offices in London. Guests were invited from venture capital, start-ups and from a variety of industries, to network and take part in a debate on the role digital technologies can play in accelerating the transition to a lower carbon future.
After an opening from BP’s head of ventures David Gilmour, including a now famous frog video, Michael Wilshire, BNEF’s Head of Strategy presented new data on the key areas where digital has most potential. Michael then moderated a panel featuring Jacqueline de Rojas, President of techUK and Paul Massara, CEO of Electron.
Jacqueline talked passionately about digital skills and the need for diversity in coding, while Paul talked about digital twins and grids. Both talked about fairness and the challenges of bringing along consumers – and governments.
For more detail on Michael’s BNEF materials and some insights from the panel, read our Digital Energy Summit Summary Report.
TusStar is one of China’s biggest incubators, with a track record of investing in over 5,000 start-ups since it was established by Tsinghua university in Beijing. This year BP Ventures joined with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to sponsor TusStar’s Clean Technology Innovation & Business Startup Competition.
From over 130 small cleantech businesses, twenty were selected for start-up boot camps, to gain expert advice and support on business plans, pitching to investors, marketing etc.
On September 21, three companies were judged to be this year's Cleantech start-up winners and will receive a cash prize from BP Ventures and support from TusStar, BP Ventures and ADB.
Incubators, like TusStar, help BP Ventures gain access to early stage business and technology ideas that feed our opportunity hopper. These can lead, for some, to equity investments. Through our sponsorship of the programme, we have already introduced one of last year’s start-ups to a BP operating business, demonstrating the vital links and deal flow we are generating from China’s dynamic cleantech ecosystem.
