Our operations

BP currently operates three sugarcane processing units in Brazil, two in Goiás and one in Minas Gerais, where approximately 5,500 people are employed.


Located in the municipality of Edéia, around 200 km from Goiânia, the Tropical plant was constructed in 2007 to use modern sugarcane processing techniques, such as the diffuser process. The following year, BP became shareholder of the site when it bought 50% of its shares, turning the Tropical BioEnergia plant into a joint venture. In the last quarter of 2011, BP announced that it had bought the rest of the shares, taking on operational control of the Tropical plant. The site currently employs over 2,000 professionals. In 2014, the Tropical's expansion was concludes, dobling its production capacity and increasing the combined processing capacity of the three units to 10 million tons of sugargane per year. 


The Itumbiara plant is installed in the municipality of the same name in Goiás, close to the border with Minas Gerais and around 200 km from Goiânia and 130 km from Uberlândia. Construction of this site was completed in 2008. With a milling capacity of 2.5 million tons of sugarcane per year and employing 1,700 people, the plant produces anhydrous ethanol (the type added to gasoline), hydrous ethanol (the type that can be found at petrol stations), very high polarization sugar (a technical specification for raw sugar) and refined sugar, and it also exports additional electricity to the Brazilian energy system – as well as other sites operated by BP. 


Situated in the Triângulo Mineiro region a little over 130 km from Uberlândia, the Ituiutaba plant is installed in the municipality of the same name. Similarly to the Itumbiara plant, this plant was also constructed in 2008. It uses the diffuser process to extract sugarcane juice and was part of the National Sugar and Alcohol Company (CNAA), acquired by BP in the first quarter of 2011. The plant has a milling capacity of around 2.5 million tons per year and employs over 2,000 people, and it has the same production flexibility found at the other sites.
