“Although I’m a marketing major, quite commonly, I’m not 100% sure of what I would like to do for the rest of my life. I do know that I want to learn a different industry, and to access a real potential trajectory for my career.”
That’s why Malik applied to join BP, where he is now a Downstream commercial intern for the B2B communications team within marketing. It’s a role in which his passion for learning and exploring new interests has grown even stronger.
“Personally, I have learned more about gas station sites than I have ever dreamed of. Two major highlights would be being able to shadow the regional marketing specialist role and setting up a Get to Know You with the head of marketing. I have not only expanded my network but also my work ethic and cross-functional capabilities.”
The support of those around him has helped Malik to make progress here, but also to develop personally. “I find myself being comfortable as a reserved person. My team members brought me out of my shell and highlighted aspects of my personality that I didn’t showcase previously.”

“I joined a team that not only cared about the work I was delivering, but cared about me – my background, my development, and my future. I’ve truly been inspired by seeing the embodiment of one team working together and supporting one another.”
There’s no doubt, Malik gets real satisfaction from learning new things, but perhaps the most rewarding is being able to apply that knowledge to make an impact on the business.
Of course, taking on a role in an industry you’re not familiar with can be daunting, but it’s exactly the kind of challenge that Malik was looking for. His advice to others considering exploring a new area is simple, “Always ask questions and keep an open mind. Importantly, be prepared to be uncomfortable. If you feel too comfortable, it’s time for your next adventure.”
