Two new digital tools are rolled out across upstream
The control room on the Atlantis platform in the Gulf of Mexico

Two new performance-boosting digital technologies pioneered by BP are being installed across the business’s global upstream portfolio. The deployment follows development and pilot testing phases in the Gulf of Mexico and the UK North Sea that saw increases in oil and gas production, as well as enhanced safety and reliability.

Plant Operations Advisor

POA, or Plant Operations Advisor, analyses more than 150 million data points in real time across 1,200 mission-critical pieces of equipment. Anomalies in the data can alert operators to take action to prevent potential issues developing further.

After a successful pilot on the Atlantis platform in the Gulf of Mexico, deployment of POA at more than 30 upstream locations is expected to “deliver improvements in safety, reliability and performance,” while helping to “raise the bar for the entire oil and gas industry,” according to Ahmed Hashmi, BP’s global head of upstream technology.

We expect the deployment of this technology not only to deliver improvements in safety, reliability and performance of our assets, but also to help raise the bar for the entire oil and gas industry.

APEX

APEX is a highly-sophisticated simulation system that creates a virtual copy of BP’s production systems throughout the world. It is helping engineers to optimize production by allowing the testing of different scenarios in minutes.

APEX’s deployment has so far contributed to an increase of 30,000 barrels of production globally, and the system is now being rolled out to all of BP’s production systems around the world.
