 Innovation at a glance

August 2020: bp announces it plans to provide some 70,000 EV chargers globally by 2030. This builds on previous announcements, including Aral’s plans for more than 100 ultra-fast charging points at retail sites in Germany. The new 350kW chargers aim to provide up to 350 kilometres of range in 10 minutes.

26 October 2020: Six of the world’s biggest energy companies join forces to develop offshore infrastructure to transport and store millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions safely in the UK North Sea. With bp as operator, the Northern Endurance Partnership will serve the proposed Net Zero Teesside (NZT) and Zero Carbon Humber (ZCH) projects that aim to establish decarbonized industrial clusters. 10 December 2020: bp and Amazon agree to extend their longstanding relationship, with bp to supply additional renewable energy to power Amazon’s operations, and Amazon Web Services (AWS) enabling the acceleration of bp’s programme to digitize its infrastructure and operations.

16 December 2020: bp acquires a majority stake in Finite Carbon, the largest developer of forest carbon offsets in the US. bp will bring the firm into its in-house business accelerator, bp Launchpad. David Eyton, EVP of innovation & engineering, describes the deal as “a great example of how we are applying our unique innovation ecosystem to foster innovation and build material energy businesses in support of our net zero ambition.”

30 March 2021: bp agrees to become a partner with BMW Group and Daimler Mobility AG in Digital Charging Solutions (DCS) GmbH, to help make electric vehicle charging simpler for drivers. Through the DCS on-board software, which integrates charging solutions into vehicle operating systems, EV drivers can access 228,000 public charging points in 32 countries.
