The elite athlete development and training programme

Three athletes that have completed MJP program will compete during the Rio 2016 Games

BP supported the elite athlete development and coaching programme designed for Azerbaijani national athletes as they prepared for high level international sporting events.

The programme was implemented in collaboration with the National Olympic Committee of the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Michael Johnson Performance (MJP).

Three athletes that have completed MJP program will compete during the Rio 2016 Games. These are Marina Durunda (Rhythmic Gymnastics), Nazim Babayev (Triple Jump) and Sabina Mikina (Fencing).
The year long programme started in January 2015. It aimed to create opportunities for a large group of national athletes and coaches to benefit from MJP’s international experience as they worked to achieve sporting excellence enhancing Azerbaijan’s representation in international sporting events. This ensured high-level preparation of target national athletes and coaches for Baku 2015 European Games and other competitions including 2016 Olympic Games.

The programme targeted four national sport federations - Athletics, Gymnastics, Triathlon and Fencing, to be represented by both coaches and athletes including BP’s Ambassador Athletes.
MJP is led by Michael Johnson, who represented USA and is one of the most celebrated Olympic athletes ever, winning 4 gold medals, and he still holds the world record for the 400m. After his retirement in 2001, Michael Johnson started MJP programme to help train other athletes to reach their full potential using the same training philosophy and training techniques he used to achieve his success.
MJP offers sports consultancy services to coaches and athletes. Its clients include renowned sport clubs, such as, Arsenal, Manchester United and 5 National Olympic Committees including Australia and China.
MJP works on generic factors such as speed, strength, suppleness, stamina and skill for any athlete – its work is complimentary to the technical coaching from the federation. MJP can support athletes of all disciplines e.g. wrestlers, gymnasts and all backgrounds i.e. Olympic and Paralympic athletes
