The Games are starting today! In just a few hours, Baku will be witnessing the magnificent opening ceremony of the inaugural Baku 2015 European Games – an exciting multi-sport event with over 6,000 participating athletes from all over Europe. The Games will feature 253 medal events in 20 different sports. 12 of these sports, including Archery, Athletics, Volleyball, Boxing, Cycling, Judo, Shooting, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Triathlon and Wrestling, offer qualification opportunities for the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics
Since becoming an official partner of the Games last year, BP has played an active role in promoting and supporting this event, supporting the development of national athletes and coaches, as well as building local capability for the future high level events and projects. BP is supporting six ambassador athletes as they prepare for and participate in this exciting inaugural event. The athletes are Ilham Zakiyev (Paralympic Judo), Elkhan Mammadov (Olympic Judo), Haji Aliyev (Olympic Wrestling), and Farida Azizova (Olympic Taekwondo), Olokhan Musayev (Paralympic Athletics) and Oleg Panyutin (Paralympic Athletics).
In April this year, we hosted these athletes in BP Xazar Centre office in Baku to demonstrate our continuous support and encourage them in the run up to the Games.
